Making the Perfect Cup of Tea

By Armando Cortes, Staff Writer

You’ve probably never heard of the expression, “easy as making a cup of tea?” and that’s because we all know that a lot of work goes into making the perfect cup of tea. Things like steeping times and even the temperature of the water can affect how your tea comes out and because we know you’ve always wanted to be a certified tea expert, here are our top 5 tips for getting your tea just right.

Tip #1:

The first tip to making sure that you’re only ever making quality tea is to avoid using microwave-heated water. We know it’s quicker and sometimes you’re running late and in a hurry, but the microwave doesn’t allow you to have full control over the temperature of the water so you’re bound to get water that’s either too hot or not hot enough. Different types of tea should be brewed at different temperatures, for example green tea should be steeped in water that is between 160 and 170 degrees Fahrenheit and if you’re following these temperature guidelines (which you should be) using a microwave isn’t your best bet.

This brings us to tip #2:

Each type of tea has a recommended steeping time, and when I say recommended I mean that you should definitely be following it. Over-steeping your tea can make it taste bitter, and if you’re trying to make that perfect cup of black tea you’re going to want to make sure to steep it for the specific amount of time that black tea should be steeped for. Over-steeping will not give your tea more flavor, what actually happens is that the over-steeping will cause the tealeaves to release more tannins, which give tea its bitterness.

Tip #3:

We understand that some of you are concerned about how difficult it might seem to make loose leaf tea as opposed to using tea bags, but not only can brewing loose leaf tea be easy, it’s definitely worth it. Brewing loose leaf tea allows the tea leaves to expand properly so that maximum flavor can be achieved, and loose leaf tea contains little to no fannings and dust to contaminate the flavor of your tea.

Tip #4:

Investing in some quality tea hardware can help you achieve that perfect cup of tea. Certain types of tea brew better with teapots made from different materials and some materials can absorb tea flavors and give your brew a special kick!

Tip #5:

Everything from how long you steep your tea to the temperature of the water that you use is vital to making an excellent cup of tea, so tip #5 is a no-brainer. If you’re going to put time and effort into making some grade-A, delicious tea why would you skimp on the quality of the tea leaves that you use? That’s why at Tea Drift we only sell premium, high-quality tea from a single source, ensuring that each cup that you brew is nothing less than perfect.

Now that you know how to make a perfect cup of tea go out and impress your friends and family!
